Hi doctors! I lost 100 lbs last year with diet and exercise. The more I lose, the more my skin hangs and it’s hard for me to do certain workouts. I still have a lot more weight to lose but I really want to do get rid of the lower part of my belly. I’m 5’3, 275 lbs. I was 380! I feel great how I am now. How much more do I need to lose to be able to get a tummy tuck and arm lift? Thanks in advance!
Answer: Recommended BMI 30 Hello,At 5'3'', your weight should be 170 to achieve a BMI of 30, the recommended BMI limit for extensive body surgery. However, depending on your build, you may not need to loose that much before being safe for surgery. One of the biggest impediments to a successful and safe tummy tuck is excessive intra-abdominal fat storage, preventing flattening of the muscle wall with muscle plication, and dangerously increasing intra-abdominal pressures. I'd would say begin the process of surgeon selection (ABPS certified/ASAPS member surgeons), and shoot for 200 pounds. Best of luck!

Answer: High BMI for tummy tuck? Congratulations on your weight loss. Most plastic surgeons suggest that you finish having children, get your weight within 10 pounds of your ideal weight, and have a BMI less than 30 before undergoing an abdominoplasty with repair of the stretched out abdominal muscles and liposuction of selective areas, in order to achieve the best long term cosmetic result with the least potential complications. Keep in mind that following advice from a surgeon on this or any other website who proposes to tell you what to do without examining you, physically feeling your tissue, assessing your desired outcome, taking a full medical history and discussing the pros and cons of each operative procedure would not be in your best interest. I would suggest that you find a surgeon certified by the American Board of American Plastic Surgery and one who is ideally a member of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) that you trust and are comfortable with. You should discuss your concerns with that surgeon in person. Robert Singer, M.D., FACS La Jolla, California

Answer: Weight loss before TT Dear smts07,Congratulations on taking the next steps to improve your body. Just a point of reference, your body mass index with the weight and height you listed is 48.7. Over 25 is considered overweight. MOst plastic surgeons would recommend you to consider surgery once your BMI is under 30. Do you currently have a goal weight in mind. Optimizing your weight prior to surgeries such as a tummy tuck will improve your results and prevent a loss of results if you were to lose the weight after surgery. Answer: Hi BMI! Hello SMTS.Congratulations on losing 100 pounds. Unfortunately, your BMI is 48.7 calculated from the measurements you have provided. This high BMI places you at an extreme risk of complications with body contouring surgery. If you cannot lose any more weight on your own, I suggest you seek professional medical help. You may even have to consider weight loss surgery. Once your BMI gets below 30, you will be a more ideal candidate for tummy tuck surgery, importantly, you should also have lower risks.Best wishes,D Dr. ALDO
