Discomfort in right breast. 3 years post MM, I have gummy bear implants, could they be ruptured? Am I at risk?

Dear CatRangel4ever,If you feel like something is off with your implants, I would suggest going to your plastic surgeon. Your PCP probably will not be able to appropriately triage this issue because it is highly specialized. If there is suspicion of rupture, and MRI can easily confirm it. Hope this helps.Nirmal R. CatRangel4ever.   Sorry to hear you are having this issue. Usually, ruptured implants do not cause pain and because they are gummy bear implants, there is no cause for concern of spillage as they are semi solid. Your first course of action should be to see your plastic surgeon for full evaluation. Best of luck.

Sorry to hear about your discomfort.  A breast implant rupture can happen at any time and can often be difficulty to detect without an MRI scan.  I suggest you get into contact with your plastic surgeon for a follow up appointment.  Best of luck to you!

I'm sorry you are having discomfort in your breast.  I recommend contacting your plastic surgeon for an evaluation.  It may be that testing such as an ultrasound or MRI is needed.  If your surgeon suspects that it is unrelated to your implant he/she will suggest your next step.

Thanks for your question CatRangel4ever.  Pain in the breast, also known as mastodynia, after augmentation can be a sign of implant rupture.  There have been no high quality studies to suggest that having silicone implants increases your risk for common diseases or disorders, but if they are ruptured, they can cause excess scarring and granuloma formation leading to distortion of the breasts and pain.  The FDA recommends MRI to evaluate silicone implants 3 years after implantation and every 2 years after that for as long as you have them.  If the implants are found to be ruptured, it is recommended that they are removed as they are "malfunctioning medical devices."  Depending on the manufacturer, replacement implants may even be provided to you at no additional cost.

Sorry for your problem and if you have concerns see your primary physician or plastic surgeon.  That said ruptures are not associated with pain but you should be evaluated Dr Corbin

If you are having breast pain following an augmentation, it may be a situation of capsular contracture and/or implant rupture.  You should follow up with your plastic surgeon.  They may suggest getting an MRI scan.  This would be the best study to determine if there is a problem with the implant.  Even if there is a ruptured implant, it should be a relatively simple procedure to remove and replace it, and in most cases should not represent a significant medical risk.  Best wishes, Dr. Lepore.
