What is the reason you can't exercise after lipo?

Two major reasons for not exercising for six weeks after thigh lifts:  exercise early in the recovery period will increase the swelling, and incisions always tend to open.  The more that is liposuctioned the greater the improvement, but the longer the period of swelling.  Most of my patients look very good by about a month or sooner, but healing is an individual process. Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Exercise is typically recommended after two weeks to minimize adhesion between skin and deeper tissues. Patients can begin walking, swimming, or riding a stationary bicycle a few days after surgery.

Thank you for your question.  Liposuction creates a space between the skin and the underlying muscle.  Exercise can result in sheer forces that delay healing and may increase your chance of bleeding into the tissues, having a hematoma, or seroma.  This can lead to significant contour abnormalities.  For best results follow your surgeons instructions explicitly.
