I see a naturopath for guidance on tackling some minor health issues with natural remedies. I currently take a liquid iron supplement (10ml twice a day) as my iron was extremely low. And a dairy free probiotic capsual (1 a day) and adrenal support capsuals (2 a day). Would I have to stop taking these before having breast lift with implants surgery and Vaser liposuction to the thighs? If so, why? And when would I have to stop taking them?
Answer: The reason to stop taking supplements before surgery Many naturopathic supplements offer great health benefits to patients, but some of them can create issues during surgery. For a breast lift with implants and Vaser lipo to the thighs, there is quite a bit of surface area created during those procedures that have the potential to bleed. Any supplements that might increase your risk of bleeding (or create issues with the anesthesia) should be stopped at least 2 weeks before your surgery.Generally, iron supplements and probiotics are safe to continue before and after surgery. As for the adrenal support supplement, I would recommend checking the individual components for their safety prior to surgery. And as always, let your surgeon know everything that you're taking - no one is judging you, we just want you to have as safe an experience as possible.Hope this helps, and best of luck.

Answer: Is it always 100% necessary to stop taking supplements before surgery? It's essential to follow your plastic surgeon's specific instructions regarding the use of supplements before surgery. While it may not always be 100% necessary to stop taking supplements, there are several reasons why your plastic surgeon might advise you to do so: 1. Risk of Interactions: Certain supplements can interact with medications used during surgery or anesthesia, potentially leading to complications or adverse effects. Stopping supplements beforehand reduces this risk. 2. Increased Bleeding Risk: Some supplements, such as fish oil, ginkgo biloba, and vitamin E, can thin the blood and increase the risk of bleeding during surgery. Your plastic surgeon may recommend discontinuing these supplements to minimize bleeding risks during and after the procedure. 3. Wound Healing: Certain supplements may affect wound healing or interfere with the body's ability to heal properly after surgery. Stopping supplements before surgery helps ensure optimal healing outcomes. 4. Accuracy of Anesthesia: Some supplements can affect the body's response to anesthesia, leading to complications or requiring adjustments in anesthesia dosage. By discontinuing supplements, the anesthesia team can better gauge your body's response to anesthesia and ensure safe administration. 5. Postoperative Recovery: Avoiding certain supplements before surgery can also help facilitate a smoother recovery process, reducing the risk of complications and promoting better overall outcomes. While stopping supplements before surgery is often recommended, it's crucial to discuss this with your plastic surgeon and disclose all medications, supplements, and vitamins you're currently taking. Your plastic surgeon can provide guidance based on your medical history, the specific procedure you're undergoing, and any potential risks or concerns.

Answer: Is it necessary to stop taking supplements before surgery? Hello, and thank you for your questionIn my practice I get everyone to stop taking supplements before surgery. The reason for my decision is that supplements contain many of the additives that are contraindicated for surgery, or that affect healing, clotting, and the body's response to surgery, or simply because we may not know exactly what is in the formulation. Because these supplements are often not medically prescribed, or have differences in ingredients and dosages from brand to brand, and patients are often unaware of exactly what ingredients are present, you may be unwittingly taking ingredients that medically we would not recommend. If you are putting trust in your Plastic Surgeon to do your surgery, would it not make sense to work with him with regard to his advice in this regard?I hope this has been of value for you.

Answer: Supplements and Surgery The answer to your question varies from surgeon to surgeon. In my office, I have everyone discontinue ALL supplements at least 2 weeks before surgery. The reason for this is that supplements, even those recommended by a doctor, do not have consistent composition so they can be evaluated for how they react with the drugs we use at surgery or whether they will interfere with healing or blood clotting. The latter is especially important for the surgery you desire.
