I had both Scuplta and Dysport injected 3 days ago. Should I massage both areas?

Injections were 2 vials Sculptra and 240 Dysport same time. Post treatment the doctor dashed out of the room before I opened my eyes. The nurse rushing at top speed told me 5 for 5. When reading the written instructions at home it said, only massage the Sculptra area and NOT the Dysport area. Called the office 7 times, emailed 3 times. No response. I am a novice to injections, very worried. What should I do? Massage, no massage? If so, where? Is that a lot of Dysport?

Hi,Thanks for your question, but sorry to hear about your experience and the worry it has caused. I agree that you should NOT massage the Dysport, but only the Sculptra. Hopefully by now you have heard back from your provider to confirm this and relieve some anxiety. As for the quantity of Dysport, the number of units varies, depending on the person and the specific areas treated, so it is hard to say whether 240 units is "a lot." This is something else you should be able to discuss with your provider to better understand your treatment. Best of luck!

I would recommend not massaging the areas you had treated with Dysport but you can massage the areas treated with Sculptra.  The 5 for 5 you were told refers to massaging the Sculptra areas 5 minutes, 5 times a day for 5 days.  The amount of Dysport used in a treatment varies by how many areas are treated and the extent of the wrinkles or furrows being treated.  If I am treating 3 areas, I generally would use about 180 units of Dysport, but I would not consider 240 units excessive for this type of treatment.

There is no need to massage after Dysport treatments.  In fact it is recommended that you do not massage the area as it can cause the product to spread to unintended areas.  It's difficult to say if the number of units used was too much.  The number of units needed depends on the areas treated.

You should massage the area where you got the sculptra injections. Massaging where you got the dysport could move it around, which you don't want to do. 240 units of dysport is not a significant amount, but it depends on where you got it injected. I would try to get in touch with the doctor again and confirm everything with them.

A simple answer would be if the Dysport was injected in the same area as the sculptra no you shouldn't massage the area. You can start to massage the area where sculptra was injected the following day. If the dysport was injected in area where the scupltra wasn't its fine to massage the areas in which were treated with sculptra.

We recommend NOT massaging an area after treated with a wrinkle relaxer like Dysport or Botox. This keeps the product from spreading to other areas not meant to be treated. Unlike wrinkle relaxers, we DO recommend massaging the area treated with a collagen stimulator like Sculptra Aesthetic. Consider Sculptra like "seeds that need to be planted." Gently massaging the area will "spread the seeds" appropriately to provide even results. The massaging can be done 4 times a day for 4 to 5 minutes for the first 3 days post op. Enjoy your results!

It best NOT to massage after Dysport injections for at least the first 4 hrs after being injected.  Massaging can actually displace the dysport.   On the other hand it is very important to massage the Sculptra.  The Sculptra should be massaged 5 times a day, for 5 minutes, for 5 days.

No massage after neurotoxins (like Dysport or Botox), in fact you'll want to avoid rubbing the treated area(s) for the first 3 hours afterwards. 
Sculptra massage is VERY important. The reason for massage is twofold, to avoid nodules that can result from an accumulation of collagen and to ensure you get the best collagen growth/results. Follow the 5-5-5 Rule: five times a day, for five minutes, for the first five days. I also instruct my patients to continue to massage once or twice a day for a full eight weeks afterwards. Follow the massage and you should start to see beautiful improvements in about eight weeks.
