Can a ultrasound break up scar tissue that's developed?? I'm on my 4th Breast Aug.

Hi, thank you for your question.  Ultrasound can be helpful for the treatment of scar tissue, but it generally must be used in conjunction with massage and stretch of the capsule.  Ultrasound alone will not break or soften the capsule around a breast implant.  This is different than the focused technology used for breaking kidney stones.  There is a current device which some plastic surgeons use in conjunction with massage and wrapping which may help with reduction of capsular contracture after breast augmentation.  I would suggest calling Aspen Rehabilitation, located in Coral Gables, Florida, to see if they can recommend any providers in your area who provide this technique.Best wishes,Dr. Naidu

The ultrasound for kidney stones is of a focused type where the energy is directed just at the stone. Therapeutic ultrasound which is been tried for many years to soften capsular contracture is completely different. I have had very little success with this modality. Over the past year or so we have been using acoustic sound wave therapy, called Z – wave. These are linear soundwaves, non-focused, not painful, and not very expensive method of remedying scar contracture. Thus far, in every patient we have treated, we have improved the capsular contracture.  We treat twice a week for month.Hope that's helpful.
