In our practice, we never use splints for a septoplasty. Splints are only used after adhesions are present inside the nose and have been lysed to prevent them from reoccurring. The splints are placed to prevent recurrence of the adhesions.
Each surgeon has different protocols for surgery. It is also important to clarify whether you are asking about stents for internal use or splints for external use (typically post rhinoplasty). During the consultation process, you surgeon can clarify his or her approach.
I assume you are speaking about internal stents? Usually a splint is placed on the outside of the nose after a rhinoplasty and stents are used internally. To answer your question, a majority of the time I do not use any sort of packing or stents in the nose after surgery. If there is a severe deviation and the surgery was difficult, I may use small pieces of silicone to help the septum heal for a few weeks. If any grafts were placed to repair holes in the septum, stents are commonly used. It will be surgeon dependent and I would find a local ENT/facial plastic surgeon who can walk you through the process.Best of luck
