Will insurance cover Liposuction if there is a medical need?

I have mitochondrial disease and I gained 45 lbs from taking a medication to control disease progression. Recently I have been working out to address the weight gain however there are a few areas that I am having trouble burning fat off with cardio. The fat needs to go because extra fat causes the disease to progress and flare up. I cannot afford liposuction and I am curious if I can get the procedure covered due to my condition.

It is almost impossible to get insurance to cover liposuction unless you have a true medical need (lipedema, panus infections etc).  Even then its quite difficult.  Best, Dr. Emer.

While it is highly doubtful that insurance would cover your liposuction (in 25 years, I have never seen insurance cover liposuction), it won't hurt to write them a letter and see.  If any story would warrant coverage it would be yours.  The worst that can happen would be that they would turn you down in which case you have only lost the cost of a stamp.  I would also suggest that you gather any supporting documents and doctor's letters that you can to submit to your insurance company.

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately liposuction is deemed a "not medically necessary" procedure and not covered by insurance.

In general, liposuction is not covered by insurance and it is not a mechanism to produce significant weight loss.
