Capsulorrhaphy surgery 2.5 weeks ago: Allergic reaction to 3M foam tape? (Photos)

Question

I had capsulorrhaphy surgery to repair bottomed out breast implants 2.5 weeks ago. I am using 3M foam tape to help support my implants while the pockets heal, but I think I'm having a reaction to the tape. I've put antibiotic ointment and gauze on the spots that have opened up and are oozing. I've developed a rash on other parts where the tape is and it itches in spots. Is there an alternative to the tape I'm using that will have the same results? Thank you for your time and help!

Dear Mom,   Thanks for submitting your pictures and sorry for your problem, which appears to be allergic reaction  to the adhesive tape . To help your situation, stop applying the tape on your skin and rub 1% Hydrocortisone ointment twice a day on the irritated skin.   To protect the capsulorrhaphy repair, my patients do not use tape, but rather wear a bra with a wire 24/7 for 6 weeks. So, you can cover the irritated skin with gauze and wear the bra on top of the gauze.  Obviously, consult with your surgeon and get his or hers input and care recommendation for your situation.                                          Best of luck,                                                            Dr Widder

I am sorry to hear about the problem you are experiencing. Unfortunately, many of the adhesives used  on tape can cause this type of reaction.  I like the use of  supportive bolster dressings for patients who have undergone the capsulorraphy procedure;  you may be able to fashion another one utilizing minimal  paper tape (the dressing  can otherwise be supported by a snug supportive bra).  Of course, your plastic surgeon may have other thoughts for you.  Best wishes for an outcome that you will be very pleased with.

From the looks of your photos, you have a contact dermatitis. It is not unusual for patients to have sensitivities to both adhesives and tape. Ask your plastic surgeon for altenrative methods of support such as surgical bras or push-up bras. In the meantime, hydrocortisone creams rather than antibiotics would be most helpful. Hope that's helpful..
