I had derma cheek fillers approx 4 months ago without issue. However just went overseas and after coming home and getting off a 16 hour flight my cheeks are swollen and painful as if they have just been injected. It’s been two days and the swelling/ pain hasnt subsided. I have obtained antibiotics today but just want to know if this kind of thing is common so long after getting the procedure and if I should be seeing a plastic surgeon as a precaution?

Answer: You may have a granuloma Hi jkelly, without knowing too much of your filler and injection history, it sounds like you may have what is called a granuloma. Granulomas appear late (usually after 6 to 24 months) at all injected sites approximately at the same time; they grow quickly and suddenly. This is estimated to occur in every 1 in 100 to 1 in 1000 filler patients. The first-line treatment would be to inject steroids in the affected areas to calm the inflammation. Sometimes antibiotics and hyaluronidase are also used. You should see a doctor or nurse practitioner who injects lots of filler, frequently. Someone with a great deal of filler experience will be the best person to handle your situation. Good luck and hang in there!

Answer: Filler answer As with any procedure. Whenever you suspect there could be an issue, you should always go back to your doctor with your concerns. Your safety comes first!
