I am 3 weeks post op and have something unusual happening. When I wake up in the morning, I have my abs completely tensed. I’m not sure if I’m pushing them out, sucking them in, or if they are just rigid. But it feels uncomfortable and extreme. I’m so scared that I’m damaging the surgery, but I can’t control it. Everything looks good from the outside.
Answer: Abdominal muscles spasm after surgery Dear Anastesia, Abdominal muscles spasm after tummy tuck surgery are quite common and they usually disappear after 2 weeks. The fact that you still have them after 3 weeks, suggest that you might be dehydrated in the morning, which can cause muscles cramps every where, including the abdominal muscles. So, make sure to hydrate yourself well before going to bed. If for some reason you are taking diuretic (blood pressure etc) that can lower your Potassium level, and that can cause muscles spasms as well. So, replenish your Potassium by drinking orange juice or eat banana, which are rich in Potassium. Since you say that everything looks ok on the outside , sounds like no damage was done so far. Follow the recommendation above and see your surgeon on Monday re evaluate you. Best of luck, Dr Widder

Answer: Can involuntary, extreme tensing of abs during sleep damage muscle repair of a tummy tuck? The tightening of the muscles may play a role in the muscle spasms. Muscle spasms can happen for many reasons. It is always best to ask these questions of your chosen surgeon as recommendations may be different.

Answer: Sleeping Thank you for your question. It sounds like you are going through a normal healing process. I doubt you will hurt anything while you are sleeping. I would still be wearing a support garment at this stage. I hope this helps.

Answer: Healing from surgery Thank you for your question. It is normal to experience some muscle spasms the first couple weeks of healing. You just want to be sure you are not over stretching your abdomen and flexing at the same time, that can put too much tension on the repair this early in the healing process.

Answer: You are very unlikely to cause any damage to muscle repair by having muscle spasms. you are very unlikely to cause any damage to the muscle repair by extreme muscle tensing - either when asleep or awake. as suggested below, - it could be due to dehydration. i would also suggest taking supplemental Mg since this can often cause it and this deficiency is very common.david berman md
