Answer: Liposuction is not a means of weight loss Liposuction is one of the most common, as well one of the most commonly misunderstood cosmetic procedures performed by plastic surgeons. Liposuction, or suction assisted lipectomy (SAL) as it is also known, allows a surgeon to contour a patient’s shape and address those areas resistant to diet and exercise. It is not a weight loss procedure and is best performed on patients who are at or near their target weight. Common target areas include: Abdomen/Flanks (“love handles”) Hips/Thighs/Legs Upper arms Back Buttocks Bear in mind, a liter of lipoaspirate (not pure fat) is approximately 2.2 lbs. The limits on liposuction performed in an office setting is 5 liters (4 liters in some states). This correlates to approximately 11 lbs. Even high volume liposuction will have very little weight loss impact. With regards to your specific question, in a patient who has successfully lost a significant amount of weight skin excess may be an issue. Not only will liposuction not address this issue, it is likely to worsen the appearance of areas with pre-operative laxity. As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

Answer: Losing weight before liposuction Thank you for the question! Because liposuction is not meant to be used as a method for weight loss, patients are strongly advised to implement healthy lifestyle changes and achieve ideal weight prior to this procedure. A good way to assess your ideal weight is to calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index). Generally, liposuction may pose some risks if your BMI exceeds 30. Your BMI of 25.7 is considered normal and suitable for liposuction patients. The fact that you've already lost a great deal of weight makes you an ideal liposuction patient. An in-person exam with a board-certified plastic surgeon would be the best way to assess your situation and guarantee an individualized medical advice. Best of luck!

Answer: Liposuction after massive weight loss Hi there I suspect you have less fat than you think compared to excess skin. In your case you would be better off seeing someone who can deal with the excess skin. Liposuction will not address this and I suspect you will not be happy without removing the skin, tightening and lifting the tissues you have left. Kind regards Mark Hanikeri MBBS, FRACS
