Whats the difference between one verses two incisions for butt implants?

What is the difference between one verses two incisions during butt augmentations? I've notived some use two one on each buttock an others use one fown the middle is there one method or the other with more benefits or risk? Thank you

Great and often asked question - the difference is, the single central incision has  a 30+% risk of wound healing complications including separation and implant exposure necessitating implant removal. However, the double incision has a less than 2% chance for the same complication. In the world of surgery, any risk/complication rate over 10% is considered extremely, if not unacceptably, high. a 2 incision technique shows a way lesser risk of wound healing problems. The single incision approach carries a higher risk of Infections and opening of the wound. If that occurs it can become quiet a lengthy process to get it healed.

When placing buttock implants, two separate incisions are much safer then just one in the crease. Although only one scar might sound more appealing, there is more to it. Single center incisions are burdened with a very high rate of wound healing problems which take a long time to heal and problems in both implant pockets may easily occur.With two incisions would healing problems also occur from time to time but much less, and they are usually self limiting, which means they heal up without surgical action. So two incisions instead of one are better and safer.

While either the one or two incisional method is acceptable for buttock implant placement, keeping the two implant pockets separated by a preserved strip of intact tissues (two incision method) has considerable merit. There is also a much lower risk of postoperative wound separation when two paired incisions are used as opposed to a single midline one.

Thank you for your question.The single incision probably has a higher rate of small wounds that require dressing changes to fully heal, compared to the two incision technique.  However, I strongly favor the 1 incision technique.  Even though there may be a couple weeks of simple dressing changes, having that scar (which ultimately heals very well) directly in the center of the "cheeks", allows you to wear whatever underwear you want and the scar will be hidden (and actually you can't see if even when you don't wear anything).Having said that, I place my implants inside the muscle, so I'm not as concerned about a small wound or superficial wound infection, as the implants are protected.  If I were placing the implants on top of the muscle, and therefore in communication with any incisional wounds, I would probably use the two incision approach.Best,Dr. Dan KrochmalMAE Plastic SurgeryNorthbrook, IL

For the butt implant procedure, I prefer the two-incision approach on either side of the intergluteal crease in the intramuscular layer. I have found that this approach reduces the risk of postop infection as compared to the one incision approach. The one incision approach utilizes an area called the presacral fascia which is much thinner and there is less blood flow. This makes the one-incision approach more prone to opening up into a wound because there is less vascularity and more tension.
