Do you have to have professional lymphatic massages after BBL?

Lymphatic massage can be very effective for swelling of the extremities after liposuction and body contouring procedures.  However, this is purely elective and not a mandatory component.

I typically recommend my patients to get at least ten lymphatic drainage massage (LDM) sessions performed by a professional LDM therapist, starting the day after Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL). Lymphatic massages done properly are proven to have a significantly positive impact in the final outcome. They will prevent contour irregularities and fibrosis (internal scars) and will help you eliminate excess lymph fluid, totally alleviating swelling and discomfort after surgery. Depending on your particular situation, the price of BBL procedures may vary from $10,000 to $20,000 in the U.S. Cost factors for buttocks enhancement procedures include: your surgeon’s expertise and experience, where you have your BBL surgery done (which country and city), the type of anesthesia or sedation that your surgeon uses, medications for your recovery, manual lymphatic drainage massages sessions, and your specialized compression garments and any other material needed to help you heal properly. ANSWER: Following liposuction it is important that you receive Lymphatic Drainage Massages (LDM). It does not necessarily need to be done by a professional, it is of more importance that these massages are done consistently throughout your recovery period.  This post-surgical lymphedema following liposuction is caused by inflammation and trauma from the cannula (instrument that sucks out the fat) moving under the skin. Channels are formed by the cannula that can fill up with fluid and the tissue also becomes swollen. Manual LDM helps to move the fluid by gently pumping it back into the lymph vessels. Without LDM the inflammation can evolve into fibrosis (a permanent hardening of the tissue) or a seroma (pocket of serum) can form. LDM helps to ensure you’ll achieve the best results possible from the surgery.As always, I recommend you check with your surgeon for their specific recommendations.
