I am 56 years old and I am extremely embarrassed by my breasts?

Hello and thank you for your question.  Many patients feel exact same way when contemplating having surgery.  I have had so many patients who express how happy they are after having gone through this surgery.   The  best advice you can receive is from an in-person consultation..  A breast lift with an implant can result in a very nice shape if good technique is used.  The size, profile, and shape of the implant is based on your desired breast size/shape, your chest wall measurements, and soft tissue quality.  This decision should be based on a detailed discussion with equal input from both you and your surgeon.   Make sure you specifically look at before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgery performed by your surgeon and evaluate their results.   The most important aspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend that you seek consultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate you in person.

It is extremely common for women in their 50's (and older) to undergo cosmetic procedures. Maintaining fitness and diet is unfairly complicated by menopausal hormone changes which cannot be controlled. Resulting breast appearances can be easily restored, usually with a combination of breast lift and implants for upper fullness.An exam and consultation with a plastic surgeon is recommended to discuss your options and expectations. This also includes lift details,  implant size, etc.

You are definitely not too old for surgery. If you have good health, then you are probably a good candidate for surgery. During the past month I did a augmentation/lift and tummy tuck on a woman in her late 60's who was healthy and has a great result. I hope you start getting the support you deserve from your family. I think it is very reasonable to be thinking about cosmetic breast surgery in your 50s. It is a time when many women are considering surgery to rejuvenate their face and bodies so don't feel like you are alone. The decision to have plastic surgery is extremely personal and you'll have to decide if the benefits will achieve your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable.
It's very important to ask your board certified plastic surgeon questions about your procedure. It's natural to feel some anxiety, whether it's excitement for your anticipated new look or a bit of preoperative stress. Don't be shy about discussing these feelings with your plastic surgeon. In my experience, I have had many patient of your age and even more, I don't see any reason to be ashamed.  

I am sorry to hear about the mean/inappropriate comments from family members. You are absolutely not “too old” for the breast  procedure assuming you are in good health.  Hopefully, your only regret after the procedure, will be that you wish you had done it sooner in life.
