25 days TT post op, wound dehiscence. I'm second guessing my PS advice (photo)

Question

I had a tt w/hernia repair/muscle separation repair. 2 weeks post op I noticed wound dehiscence, PS said to use soap/water 2x day. It healed shortly after however, I noticed the other hip had wound Dehiscence. PS said same thing but use antibiotic ointment with bandage. I just realized it got bigger. I’m second guessing my PS advice. He’s a reputable PS in Beverly Hills. Help me :( how can I advocate for myself. I don’t know if his advice is suitable.

Hello. Great question. I am sorry for your post op difficulties. Wound dehiscence is not uncommon post op. Keep following your surgeon's post op instructions.

Dear thereserose,
this type of wound is not uncommon after tummy tuck. It is usually caused by poor blood flow or increased tension. I would suggest you to consult your plastic surgeon, follow your surgeon's instructions and keep your wound clean and covered. It can take few weeks or months for wound to fully heal.

Thank you for your question and photo! Your surgeon advice is very good. He knows you the best and knows the procedures that was done better than evebody else. I will follow his advice. Keep in contact and report any changes like ( fever, liquid draining form the wound, redness) to your surgeon. It is very important to follow his instructions.

There are many different ways to treat wound dehiscence. Your plastic surgeon knows you and your operation the best. I would follow his advice. The wound may also look worse before it gets better. Scar can always be revised down the line if there are issues with their appearance.

Thanks so much for reaching out.  Your surgeons advice is good.  You need to follow instructions carefully and see your surgeon often.  Report to your surgeon if anything changes(redness fever, liquid draining form the wound). Make sure you do not over exert yourself and don’t  lift anything heavy, as this will out too much tension on your wound.I hope this helps :)

I'm sorry you're experiencing wound complications.  They can be frustrating and take time to heal.  If you are uncomfortable with your surgeon's advice you may want to start by asking questions.  Some examples may be: How can I tell my wound is moving in the right direction? What are red flags I should be aware of? In addition you want to schedule regular follow up appointments so that your surgeon can adjust treatment as needed based on your progress.

I'm sorry you are experiencing those issues. Your surgeon knows you the best and knows the procedure that was done the best. Those wound should heal, and the scar can be revised at a later date if it is problematic. Please keep up with your surgeon regularly and let him/her know if any changes occur that concern you, especially a fever, drainage from the wound (different that before), redness/firmness of the tissues, new pain, etc. Best wishes
