Restylane is a collection of injectable fillers used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles, smooth marionette lines around the mouth, and plump the lips. Restylane fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin. Results typically last between three to six months. LEARN MORE ›
Restylane may be right for you if you’re seeking a temporary solution to lines, wrinkles, or loss of volume in the face. If you’re seeking a longer-lasting solution, other options to consider are Radiesse, Sculptra, fat transfer, or a facelift.
Restylane is not recommended for anyone with a bleeding disorder, and it may not be a good option for someone with a connective tissue disorder or who’s had a bad result with other hyaluronic acid fillers. If you have a history of scarring or hyperpigmentation, talk to your doctor. These side effects are a risk with hyaluronic acid based fillers like Restylane.
Restylane generally lasts for six to nine months, but it depends on many factors.
It varies depending upon the area, the amount, the patient's activity level and metabolism, says Dr. Michael Persky, an Encino, Calif., facial plastic surgeon, in a RealSelf Q&A.
It lasts longest in areas that are the least mobile. It commonly lasts for a year or more under the lower eyelids when tear trough depressions are corrected. It disappears quickest in the most mobile areas like the lip.
If you don’t immediately see the results you expect from Restylane, don’t despair.
The final outcome is realized generally at the two-week mark after any potential swelling/bruising has resolved, says Dr. Harold Kaplan, a Los Angeles facial plastic surgeon, in a RealSelf Q&A.
Also, the smooth gel fillers work by attracting volume to the area injected, which reaches its full potential at the two-week mark as well.
Depending on where your injection site is, you can expect bruising and swelling to last for a few days to two weeks. Periodic icing with cold compresses during the first 48 hours helps with the worst of it.
You may be able to reduce bruising and swelling before it happens by avoiding ibuprofen, omega acids, and alcohol. Your provider will usually have a list of things to avoid.
Many Restylane providers recommend taking over-the-counter medications containing Arnica montana, starting before your treatment. Ask your provider whether it’s recommended for you.
The average price of Restylane is $750, as reported by the RealSelf community, but the cost can vary quite a bit depending on geographic locationand how many areas your provider treats.
Restylane is often compared to Juvéderm, another hyaluronic acid based filler. Doctors say Restylane is less likely to cause persistent swelling and to migrate in the tear trough area below the eyes.
Restylane is more cohesive and tends to stay where it is placed, says Dr. Kenneth Steinsapir, a Beverly Hills oculoplastic surgeon, in a RealSelf Q&A.
The advantage of this cohesion is that Restylane can be used to build up the face in a way that is impossible with Juvéderm. On the other hand, one has to expect lumps with Restylane and actively work to smooth these if they occur. This can easily be done, and it is my opinion that the results are worth the effort.
When making the decision to get a dermal filler, don’t just consider the filler. Be sure to find out how much experience your provider has with it.
The most important thing is to find a skilled injector who knows the subtle differences in flow characteristics of the products and is comfortable with each of them, says Dr. Michael Gold, a Nashville dermatologic surgeon, in a RealSelf Q&A.
Many experienced providers prefer Restylane over other smooth gel fillers for the under-eye area known as the tear trough. Restylane has a more predictable outcome in this delicate area and is considered very safe.
Restylane Silk offers subtle, natural-looking results around the mouth. Providers find it particularly good for shaping contours or blending fine lines.
Side effects related to Restylane are uncommon with experienced providers, but may occur. The most common side effect is unwanted lumps or bumps, although these often go away over a few months as Restylane dissolves. If these don’t go away, your provider may use hyaluronidase to dissolve the Restylane.
The Tyndall effect is a bluish discoloration that occurs when a gel filler is placed too close to the surface of the skin. The way that light is absorbed or reflected back by the gel leads to a grayish or blue hue. It can be corrected with hyaluronidase. However, having an experienced injector helps avoid the improper placement that causes the effect.

I was very keen on getting a nose job and a chin implant this past summer due to my "butt" chin (really wasn't that bad, I just have a dimple in the middle) and my nose being asymmetrical and appearing bigger on one side. After going to two plastic surgeons, I decided to go with the second one,... READ MORE
I am really glad I did this. Over the last year I developed horrible under eye bags. I did not have money or time for the surgery so went with restylane. Doctors on here advised against it saying I would not be happy but I am. I was very realistic with my expectations and it's not perfect... READ MORE
This was my third attempt to get the lips I have always wanted. I would lie if I told you that I wasn't scared of bruising or bad results. Being Dr. Darrow's patient for almost 2 years, I would also say that I was very comfortable trying this again. He did amazing job! Anyway, I didn't prepare... READ MORE

I'm sure I've spent thousands of dollars on eye creams over the years, always hoping the next one would be the one to finally get rid of the bags under my eyes. I've had dark circles and noticeable tear troughs all my life (inherited from my father and his family), but after I turned 25, it started to quickly get worse. There was not a single photo of myself that I liked, because on each of them, I saw a tired 35+ lady who's lived a hard life instead... READ MORE
I was highly motivated to recapture a youthful appearance to my hands. When I was younger my veins in my hands were pronounced, but my skin was tight. I recently got Restylane lip injections. I had it done before and loved the results. I have nice shaped full lips. I just wanted to have my creases filled because I use to smoke cigarettes. I had restylane injections to my upper eyelid for what the doctor termed an "a-frame deformity". After the injections my eyelid would not completely open and the eye was narrower than the other.
