What is considered the flank area?

The flank area usually refers to the sides of abdomen, but not the back.  In order to properly perform liposuction along the lower back, the patient needs to be flipped over during surgery (tummy tucks and flank liposuction are typically done with the patient lying on their back the whole time).  Find out from your doctor what was done, and where liposuction was actually performed.  If liposuction along the back was not performed, you may want to wait at least six months to let the rest of the operated areas heal first.  Good luck!

When liposuction of the flanks is combined with tummy tuck there are limitations on the amount of suction that can be performed before there is compromise in the healing of the tummy tuck. For me the flank is all the way around the back, between the ribs and the top of the buttocks.

Dear Coley444, The "flanks" are the area on the side of a person's body from ribs to hip. It does not typically include mid/lower back. I would discuss your concerns with your operating surgeon, every office has different policies on revisions. Best of luck!

it refers to where you waistline would be on your backside.  It is where muffin tops develop.  But if your problem is one of loose skin, no amount of suctioning will remove that.  Its best to allow complete healing 3-4 months before critically evaluating your results.  Then you can discuss your concerns with your surgeon and find out what options you have for improving your results.  In my practice, waiting at least 3 months is needed for additional liposuction and if you can wait longer, even better.  And yes, sometimes we do not get perfectly symmetrical sides.
