What is single incision surgery for FTM top surgery, and why would it be used instead of periareolar or keyhole surgery?

My ftm son is scheduled for top surgery in two weeks. He is an AA / A cup. His surgeon said he would do a "simple incision" procedure instead: a single incision between my son's nipples. None of us like the idea of his having a large scar between his nipples for the rest of his life. The doctor said there wasn't enough tissue for keyhole or periareolar surgery; but aren't those the methods recommended for ftms with smaller breasts?
