Can Botox cause dry itchy swollen eyes?

Question

Nearly one month after my Botox injections between my brows and forehead (total of 40 units ) I woke up with very swollen red dry itchy eyelids. My eyelids have never been dry in my life and I didn't use any new make up or creams on them.

Hello. Thanks for sharing your question. Yes, it is possible that BOTOX® is causing your eyes to feel dry, itchy or swollen. This can happen if the injections interfere with your ability to properly close your eyes, which can result in that dry, itchy feeling. Talk with your cosmetic surgeon or eye doctor about possible treatment options, which might include lubricating eye drops that help to mimic your natural tears. Hope this helps!

Botox has been repeatidly shown to be able to cause "dry eye" syndrome, particularly when injected laterally in the Crow's feet area. One of the dry eye symptoms is the sensation that a foreign object (grit) is in the eye. See an ophthalmologist for guidance on what to do to prevent permanent damage to your eyes.

Thanks for your question. Botox typically does not cause swollen and itchy eyelids, but can cause dryness of the eyes if too much is given in the muscle used to close the eyelids. It was a good thought about the new make up and creams, also consider if you have used any new detergents or soaps recently. If you were having an allergic reaction to Botox, you most likely would have experienced symptoms closer to the time of injection. I would recommend following up with either the provider that conducted the procedure or with your primary care physician if the problem continues. I hope this helps!

Eyelid itching would be a very unusual reaction, especially a month after injection. I recommend following up with your plastic surgeon or ophthalmologist for evaluation.
