Cadaver rib graft is extensively processed to make it inert and sterile. It would be highly unlikely for anyone to get an infection from these products.
It is definitely possible to get a herpes viral infection after nasal surgery during which a cadaveric rib graft was used. However, in such an event, the herpes infection was not transmitted by the cadaveric rib graft but instead the result of surgical stress causing virus activation and clinical infection in a person previously infected with the herpes virus. It is recommended that these patients be treated prophylactically with antiviral drugs before and after the surgery. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon that many people are unaware that they have been previously infected and are carriers of the virus.Mario J. Imola, MD, DDS, FRCSC, FACS.
