Will taking choline or Phosphatidylcholine affect efficiency of Botox since choline is the precursor to acetylcholine?

Question

I take choline supplements and have noticed my Botox never really set in like it usually does, except dose and injector same etc. the only thing different is I have started taking phosphatidylcholine. Would it being the precursor to acetylcholine be the reason? Will injecting again without supplementation cause a better result or will I be immune?

There should be no interaction with the effects of Botox if taking this supplement. The Botox only works at the motor endplate of a nerve. It inhibits the release of the acetylcholine from the nerve ending. Duration of action is related to the regrowth of the nerve endings. Some people only get 2 months out of Botox. Extensive sun exposure and working out have been associated with shorter durations.

There is no current evidence that taking phosphatidylcholine will affect Botox efficacy. Botox works by preventing your nerve endings from releasing acetylcholine (Ach) to signal your muscle to contract. Having extra Ach is not necessarily an issue if the nerve cannot release it at all. I do not know of any studies showing that taking these supplements will affect the results of your Botox treatment. I would see what happens with your next Botox treatment before making any conclusions.

Thank you for your question.I am not aware of any scientific evidence that would link supplements to a difference in efficacy of Botox injections.  It is a complex process by which any ingested particles can be absorbed in the gut then transported to nerve cells and then reassembled to acetyl choline.  These acetyl choline molecules are then held in reserve for the right signal to release into the junction of nerve and muscle.  Botox works by blocking this signal and not releasing the acetyl choline.  The body is a marvelous organism that we do not entirely understand but it is rare for the body to store or produce more than it needs to carry out its routine functions.Is it possible your supplements have changed Botox effects?  Sure.  I do think it unlikely.  I doubt there is any real study that investigates the possibility.Best Dr. L

Taking any kind of a vitamin or supplement will not affect the results of Botox. If you require a treatment using Botox, you may proceed with such at your leisure. Good luck from New York City

Although there may be issues with a choline-poor diet, there is no issue with supplemental choline and Botox.  Especially in the form a fatty acid moiety, the availability of choline from this supplement at the neuromuscular endplate is negligible.   Individuals who partake intense aerobic exercise has been linked to rapid Botox turnover in my experience.  Best wishes.
