How much should I weigh in order to jave tram flap reconstruction?

Question

I had a mastectomy in 2008 and want the tram flap reconstruction. I weigh 245lbs right now. I really need this surgery I am 32 and its hard to lose weight I also had my thyroid removed and they said it would affect my metabolism. I dont want implants and dont know what to do.

At 245 you might be at higher risk for complications.  It is important to know your BMI and were you "carry" your weight.  Also patients are becoming more sophisticated regarding DIEP flap surgery.  Many want to know that truly no muscle was taken.  So I offer to show them photographs of their surgery so the can see it was a DIEP flap (ie - no muslce).

Generally speaking, I prefer to use the tummy to reconstruct a breast in patients whose BMI is less than 35. Over that BMI, risks can be higher.   I agree with the previous plastic surgeon that a DIEP or muscle sparing TRAM is preferred in all patients if possible.  Best of luck!

I think you should consider the DIEP flap.  It spares your muscles and nerves.  A TRAM flap doesn't.  You should call and have a consult scheduled with a DIEP flap surgeon in your area or if one is unavailable feel free to contact us and set up a consultation. 512-533-9900
