08/01: I had one 1cc Restylane Defyne. Subtle results so I decided to do another 1cc on 08/31. At the end of the session the doctor said that I would bruise this time. I wasn't concerned with the bruising until I noticed a few tiny blisters below my nose on 09/02. When I went in the office for a follow up today, the doc said that a blood vessel had been blocked and immediately dissolved the filler. I am freaked out as the doc wants to do IPL treatments. Has my skin tissue been destroyed?
Answer: Filler (Restylane, Juvederm, Voluma) & Vascular Occlusion The redness in your picture may indicate vascular compromise. The filler can be reversed with hyaluronidase and it may take a series of treatments. It can also be treated with topical vasodilators (nitropaste) as prevention. I suggest following up with your injector. Redness can be improved with lasers (ProYellow, Excel V, VBeam) and microneedling/prp. Best, Dr. Emer

Answer: Vascular Occlusion After Defyne in Lips Thank you for your question. Based on your photos it looks as though you have developed a significant bruise. The blisters you are describing may be signs of vascular occlusion. The good thing is that these concerns were addressed quickly and appropriately.

Answer: Vascular Occlusion post Restalyne Defyne to lips Vascular occlusion after injections of fillers are rare but real complications. If you have a large bruise in the area injected,or a lot of pain, you should inmmediately contact your injector. Dissolving the filler is exactly what needed to be done. As far as the IPL treatments, they would be beneficial to get rid of the bruises a little faster. I am so glad for you that your injector handled this complication correctly.

Answer: Restylane Defyne Lip Augmentation Restylane Defyne and discoloration post procedure may be either bruising or potentially vascular compromise. The Restylane products, particularly Refyne and Defyne, are less likely to cause this as they are less hydrophilic (absorb water). A hallmark of vascular occlusion is pain. Check with your injector immediately when concerned about compromise. Best Dr. Anil Shah

Answer: Bruising vs. Vascular compromise from filler injection Thank you for the photos and for sharing your concerns. It looks like you have a significant bruise. While this is thankfully rare, it can happen with lip injections. The blistering or pale color change in the later photos could imply vascular occlusion (pressure from swelling resulting in closed vessels). In my practice, we would dissolve your filler immediately with hyaluronic acid. If the physical exam is consistent with a vascular issue, topical Nitropaste would be applied as well. For the discoloration, down the road, there are good laser options. Best of luck and take care.
