My doctor says I need to massage with a hand held massager post liposuction but I think it is too early and it hurts like heck?

You should bring up your concerns to your doctor. Every surgeon has his/her own protocol post-liposuction. Mine also involves massage/foam rolling/endermologie, but most aggressive massage isn't tolerated until about the 3 week mark in my experience. You might want to double check with your surgeon that s/he wants you doing that aggressive of massage at 5 days. Hope that helps!CDK

Hi, Lisannez.  I do advise my patients to massage over the liposuction area starting 1 week after the procedure.  However, if you are in pain, you could wait a little longer to start the massage.  Also, avoid too hot of towel on your surgical area.  After liposuction, you may have a decreased sensation over the surgical area - you do not want to be burned with a very hot towel.  Good luck with your recovery.
