Vitamin B6 Ok Before Surgery?

Vitamin B6 is not known to increase risk for bleeding. However, please ask your surgeon for their advice.

Please do not worry. It is safe to take Vitamin B before surgery; there is no correlation between vitamin B and increase in bleeding during the procedure. We ask our patients not to take aspirin and products containing aspirin typically 2 weeks before the procedure. There is a list of supplements to avoid like fish oil, ginseng, Vitamin E, garlic, ginkgo biloba, Echinacea, cayenne and many more. Use of these natural products may not be desirable around the time of surgery.

Check with your surgeon about vitamin B6 before your operation. I doubt it makes the difference.

There are many medications and supplements that are known to cause an increased risk for bleeding, especially during or after surgery. Vitamin B6 is not known to be one of these, but discuss this with your surgeon.

Vitamin B6 is typically not associated with bleeding risk, especially in the recommended doses for dietary supplementation.  However, as with all substances, exceeding recommended doses can cause a variety of side effects and problems, and vitamin B6 is no different.  Thus, as long as you are not exceeding the recommended daily supplemental doses of vitamin B6 it should be OK before surgery.  Vitamin E is more commonly associated with effects on platelets, and it can increase bleeding risk.  Thus, it should be discontinued at least 2 weeks prior to surgery.  Check with your own surgeon about his or her guidelines too, and if there is ever any question about dietary supplements, at least those that you are taking on your own and not under the advice of a doctor, it is ALWAYS best practice to simply discontinue their use briefly around the time of surgery.  Of course, as with all medications, any supplements that you are taking under your doctor's advice should be continued until directed by him or her.  Good luck.

Thank you for the question but I do not think you have anything to worry about when it comes to the vitamin B6 and your upcoming surgery.  The majority of medications your plastic surgeon will want you to avoid are medications that can prolong clotting time, such as aspirin, Motrin etc.

This should not be a problem, but it is better to ask this type of pre-operative question of your surgeon. All the best. 

Vitamin B is not a medication that would be of concern for bleeding after a breast augmentation you want to be off any aspirin or aspirin containing products, Ibuprofen, Excessive amounts of Vitamin E >800 I. U./day, and fish oil that contains EPA. If you are every unsure about whether or not to take an over the counter medication don't take it unless you ask first.
