Can I have laser treatment done on my face, while using imiquimod cream, also on my face?

I heard about laser treatment on the face to remove sun damage spots. I finally got an appointment for tomorrow, to go ahead with the laser treatment, but just started using imiquimod cream yesterday. I have used the cream for a couple of years now (when needed)and it seems to help in fighting actinic keratosis. Will the combination be safe or will the imiquimod be sufficient, on its own, to solve both problems?

Using imiquimod cream prior to laser will give you a more aggressive response. Actinic keratoses may be pre treated with a course of imiquimod, followed by photo dynamic treatment--however, most protocols involve starting with photodynamic treatment then finishing with an imiquimod course.

I find you get better results with this combination however its best you are not irritated at all prior to the laser and start the imiquimod immediately after if you are looking to get rid of sun damage/pre-cancers.  If this is just for antiaging, wait 2-3 weeks to start the imiquimod.  I suggest you go to a laser expert who understands the intricacies of using these together.  Best, Dr. Emer.
