Will the swelling ever go down or hardness is this common or is it something to be concerned about

More than likely, the swelling around your belly button at 3 weeks post tummy tuck is referred to as induration.  This is an increase in fibrous elements in injured tissue commonly associated with the inflammatory process.  This process over time will lead to wound healing.  Obviously, there are other potential reasons for this hardness which could include a fluid collection of either serum or blood.  My best suggestion for differentiating between the various possibilities that could be causing this hardness would be to consult with your plastic surgeon.

Its usually normal for your tummy to feel quite hard after tummy tuck surgery but there may be other causes so its important to have a review with your plastic surgeon.

hardening after surgery is a normal response of the tissues to healing. This is due to an influx of healing cells. Over time this will soften again to become normal.
