Can you go under “conscious sedation” or “twilight anesthesia” or “local anesthesia” for a BBL?

I'm too scared to be put under. I am looking for a “safer” alternative for the BBL procedure and what to look for with a Dr who is able to offer other options than general anesthesia. Thanks!

Thank you for your question. In my practice I use intravenous sedation only and not general anesthesia for all my body contouring cases, including BBLs and tummy tucks. I use the VASER Hi Def Lipo sculpting technique 360 degrees. The sculpting part is almost more important than the amount of fat injected during a BBL. Under strictly local anesthesia, the sculpting I do, down to the muscle fascia and right under the skin would be not possible due to the pain/discomfort of the patient, thus leading to less than optimal results.See a board certified plastic surgeon experienced in advanced body sculpting techniques for an in person consultation/evaluation/ Good luck.

Although the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia, this procedure can be extraordinarily painful for the patient.  You want the most dramatic transformation possible, and you do not want to be in pain. If you want to achieve a maximal result, I would recommend general anesthesia with a board certified plastic surgeon who performs hundreds each year and has a proven record of great results.

Getting a Brazilian Butt Lift under local anesthesia can be very painful and is not recommended. Modern general anesthesia is low risk and has less drawbacks.

I routinely do BBLs under "twilight" sedation also known as TIVA (total IV anesthesia). This is still considered general anesthesia, you are just given propofol and allowed to continue to breath on your own. You still have almost all of the risks of "general anesthesia", so this is not safer per se. In fact, in the hands of an anesthesiologist that is not seasoned at this type of anesthesia it can be more dangerous as your airway is not protected. Remember you need to be in a prone position for part of this surgery and this can be dangerous without a protected airway. In my office OR we have an amazing anesthesiologist that is very good at this type of sedation.

Hi. I never perform any plastic surgery procedure under general anesthesia to avoid unnecessary risks, I use IV sedation and when the patient sleeps then regional (epidural) anesthesia is given.

Yes certainly you can have a local anesthetic and some sedation for a BBL—there is a doctor in my practice that does it exclusively under local with sedation for all of his patients. I personally prefer a general anesthetic for my patients so  Ionly use a general but if someone wants to have it done without a general I refer to him.
