How soon after breast augmentation can you handle your breasts?

Question

I am scheduled for breast augmentation in two weeks time. My doctor has recommended I go with sillicone implants. My question is during the healing process, how soon after the surgery can your breasts be touched or gently held or handled during intimate times, with or without your support bra? And, will this affect the healing process?

I advise my patients not to participate in any activities that can significantly raise their heart rate or cause excessive movement in their breasts for a week or two after their breast augmentation. I recommend that they not engage in vigorous, strenuous sexual activity for 4-6 weeks after surgery. It's a great question. Speak with your surgeon about their specific advice. Only they can advise you specifically. In my office I start breast massage one week after the procedure. You could probably start very gentle handling of your breasts at around one week. Again, seek your surgeon's specific advice and follow their instructions closely. Immediately after surgery, the concern would be causing a bleeding episode which would require re-operation. I recommend that my patients maintain soft support and avoid strenuous activities and breast manipulation for the first week. If all is healing well at the first post-op appointment (1 week), patients with smooth surfaced implants are instructed in gentle implant massage exercises. Your own plastic surgeon may have different recommendations, and I would discuss this them before your procedure.

Your plastic surgeon will always be your best resource when it comes to specific instructions in regards to returning to activities. Generally speaking, best  to limit strenuous activity for at least 2 weeks after breast  augmentation surgery, assuming you are doing well and there have been no complications.  
Care should be taken during the first two weeks after surgery not to allow for elevation of heart rate, blood pressure, and/or direct trauma/contact to the chest wall. Generally speaking, most my patients are able to return to lower body exercise at the 2 week post operative mark, wait to lift/run for about 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.  Other exercises, involving the pectoralis major muscles, may resume several months down the line, if not longer. 
In other words, start slow and "listen to your body" as you gradually progress in intensity/duration of all activities including sex and exercise. Best wishes.

Hello. Thank you for your inquiry and congratulations on your surgery!
It is important to have an in-person medical assessment regarding this issue as it is difficult to determine virtually. Continue to update your doctor in the matter and follow their post-op protocol.
It is important to get cleared by your doctor before engaging in specific physical activity before the 3 month healing period has ended as the healing stage is crucial for healthy results.
It generally takes around 6 months to a year to see your final results. Your tissues will take time to relax and allow your implants to "Drop and Fluff" settling into place.
Our tips for recovery following breast augmentation are to wear a supportive sports bra for 3 months post-operative and refrain from lifting anything heavier than 10 lbs for 3 weeks as we don't want any strain at your incision sites. Make sure to keep the area of your stitches clean by cleansing with hydrogen peroxide daily. Showering is encouraged! But, no sitting in water for 2 weeks following surgery (no baths, hot tubs, pools etc.).

Thank you for your question.  Of course your plastic surgeon will give you specific advice which you should follow.That said, your surgeon may advise you to start gentle massages of your implants at 2 weeks with your own hands.In my practice I recommend that you not allow another person to touch your breasts until healing has progressed until at least 3 weeks. Any more intense touching of your breast by another person really should be delayed until 6 weeks.
