Lip filler swelling is this normal? (photos)

Hi I had fillers yesterday, Juvederm and they swelled up and become very bruised quickly, it’s coming to the time of the month and I have an iron deficiency so I just buy the bruising down to that, but today the swelling and bruising is so bad, I can’t even pucker my lips?? I went to the same qualified nurse I have been to before and never had problems but now I look like a swollen up duck? It’s the outer swelling I’m really concerned about? Thank you

Yes, this can be typical after lip fillers. I would wait a full 2 weeks before judging the results, but this may be superficially placed filler. If it is after the two week wait, you can have the filler reversed with hyaluronidase.

Thank you for your question and for sharing your photographs.  Swelling is common after treatment with Juvederm, especially when the lips are injected.  Normal postprocedure swelling can often cause the appearance of asymmetry and/or unwanted fullness.  I recommend that my patients apply ice to the affected area, 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, for up to 48 hours after the procedure.  Arnica may also be helpful for minimizing normal postprocedure swelling and bruising.  Please keep in mind that it will take up to 2 weeks to allow normal postprocedure swelling and bruising to fully resolve and to see your final result.  If you continue to have concerns, please be sure to see your injector for an in-person reevaluation in order to determine the best course of action.  Hope this helps and best wishes!

It is not uncommon to develop swelling and bruising following lip injections.  As injectors, we always do our best to minimize the chances of these effects.  However, some people are more prone to swelling and bruising, particularly if they are taking any medications that thin the blood.  Continue using ice and sleeping with your head elevated.  Most bruising and swelling resolves within 7 days.  While the bruising and swelling is certainly frustrating, the great results are worth the short downtime!

It is not unusual to be swollen one day after fillers are injected, especially in the lips. That being said, you have considerably more than we usually see. I would wait it out for 3-4 days. If not considerably better return to see the person who performed the injections.

Swelling and bruising are common after lip injections and can persist up to two weeks.  I recommend intermittently icing the area and keeping your head elevated the next couple of days.  Some patients also find the supplements Arnica and Bromelain to be helpful.

Thank you for your question. Yes, depending on the area that was injected and the amount injected, your swelling is likely normal. You can ice the area, 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, and that may help to hasten the resolution of the swelling. But, to be honest, it will likely just take time. Any time a needle is placed in the face, there is always a potential of bruising and swelling. Give it a couple weeks. Best of luck!

Maybe your nurse used a different filler or a different technique. You also have significant bruising which will make your lips swell more. I would give it another two weeks for the swelling to come down. Good luck from New York City
