Hi, I had an FUE transplant 12 days ago and I'm slightly worried about the recovery in my donor area. During the procedure they took 3,700 grafts to cover the front area and excluding the crown. Looking at the donor parts, I see the area is still red and getting fuller each day except for the part highlighted in red (See picture). Q1. Will I get my hairs back in the donor area (including the part in red) ? Q2. Is it normal that my donor area feels sore 12 days after surgery ? Thank you

Some people feel sore after surgery and some say they have almost no pain.  Hairs will not grow back from where it was harvested. If the area was over harvested you will have a very thin area.

3700 grafts is not the best practice to have in one session. This tends to happen in clinics attracting patients from abroad. Your incidence of shock loss in the donor area goes up exponentially in cases greater than 2000 grafts. Sometimes this shock loss is permanent. You will have to wait 6 months to judge this. Pre treatment on finasteride for a year also reduces this incidence. Soreness in the area is common and can continue to occur for a number of months in rare cases. Pop back to see the doctor who performed the surgery to examine the area regarding your pain.

The area in the red rectangle should of never been targeted for harvesting. Not only is the area already very thin, but the hairs that were in the area is not considered permanent. These hairs will not likely last very long in the recipient area.

The area in red may be an area that was thin prior to the procedure, and though it was have been trimmed may not have been used for harvest.  If this is so, then the hair won't return as there was none to begin with.Usually pain is gone by a week after surgery but it is not unheard of to still be sore.  If you are concerned a visit to your surgeon to have the area examined and to review preop photos may be in order.

You may have been over-harvested, and if that is the case, it may not return to normal. Wait it out for 6 months and see what happens. If your donor density was low, this can happen. See below
