Could this be an allergic reaction to something? (photos)

Question

I'm 6 days post op.. Incisions have itched terribly since day one. I've taken benedryl but it hasn't relieved the itching very much. I thought maybe it was the bra rubbing the incisions but after seeing the small red spots I think there's more going on. What can I do to relieve the itching? It keeps me awake at night even!

Most likely you are having a reaction to either the sutures or adhesive from taping, but only your own plastic surgeon can evaluate this properly and advise you on treatment.

Thank you for your question and photographs. I would recommend you see your plastic surgeon for a closer evaluation of your incision line. It is very important to rule out concerning issues such as infection, especially with an implant nearby, but likely it is irritation or a reaction to tape, adhesives, glue, or dressings placed during surgery.

This is a good question.  What you are describing is fairly common after having a breast augmentation.  Depending upon what you surgeon used as part of your dressing, you can have a risk for an allergic reaction. Such things as surgical glue adhesives, steristrips, and even the bandages we all use can cause the type of reaction that you re describing.  It is important to "Rule-out" an infection, though, as that is a more serious matter and lead to complications with your procedure.  The best rule of thumb is to see your surgeon ASAP and have him look at your area of concern and determine which it is.  If for no other reason, that if it is just an allergic reaction, he or she can prescribe something to help relieve the symptoms that you are experiencing.
