I am 5’5 240 and I’m having TT, BBL, and lipo abroad. I was wondering what I should do about PO pain management? Will I need RX pain medication. Is it normally something the PS would prescribe. Should I talk to my PCP in advance about this? I’m nervous about being in pain when I get back home and not having anything but OTC meds for the pain.
Answer: I'm having TT, Lipo, and BBL in DR. What I should do about post op pain management? Thanks for your question. Post op medication is usually aquired with your surgeon. If they don't provide it you can usually get them with a prescription at a pharmacy. When considering surgery overseas don’t settle for less than a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with specialized expertise in this procedure.

Answer: I'm having TT, Lipo, and BBL in DR. What I should do about post op pain management? Your surgeon should provide you with post operative pain medications. The fact that this doesn’t seem to be happening is a serious red flag and you may want to look into this surgeon a bit more before going through with surgery. The problem with going to somewhere like the DR for cheap surgery is that you never know what you’re going to get. Good plastic surgery is never cheap and cheap plastic surgery is never good. Do yourself a favour and if you can’t afford to do the procedure safely at an accredited facility with a board certified surgeon then don’t take the risk.

Answer: Reconsider having your surgery abroad. First things first. Why are you going to the DR for your surgery? It is important to have your surgeon available for follow-up. A daughter of one of my patients went to the DR and ended up having a blood transfusion (which she had to pay cash for). Then I had to take care of her healing complications and she had some pretty bad scarring from overaggressive liposuction. True, the same things could happen in the U.S., but we do have a high level of overall medical care here. This is just not the place to save a few thousand dollars. Touchup procedures are not unusual. Seromas happen and need to be cared for. But, back to your question, yes you would probably need to have a local physician prescribe you narcotic pain meds unless you are give a sufficient quantity in the DR to last you when you return home.

Answer: Medication after Plastic Surgery Thank you for your question. Your Surgeon will give you a list of medication you'll need right after surgery, it's important to follow instructions carefully before and after surgery and do as your Surgeon says. Dominican Republic is an excellent destination for plastic surgery, there are many Doctors that have trained locally and abroad for many years, Doctors who are certified, have years of experience and hundreds of patients who are pleased with their results and experience. Taking that in consideration, I encourage you to make sure you meet your Surgeon's clinic BMI policy, most clinics will only allow patients up to 30-35, your BMI is almost 40, which makes you ineligible in most clinics. Also, allow yourself sufficient time in the DR to heal properly and attend all post op visits required.

Answer: Surgery Overseas Dear Lifeisplastic,Thank you for your question. Any type of plastic surgery, especially when done out of the country should be carefully coordinated. This includes a preoperatuve safety clearance, a postoperative protocol, and a pain management plan. I personally have had to deal with many complications from out of the country surgeries. The lack of followup leads to late diagnosed complications. You should ask you surgeon what his/her plan is if complications arise. Will he/she cover your medical bill in the US? Will he/she fix the issue later?Good luck,Nirmal R. Nathan, M.D.Certified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic Surgeons
