I‘m 21 years old and have vitiligo (only on my lips) for about 5 years. In the past 5 years, it hasn’t spread beyond my lips and stayed stable since I first lost pigment. I would like to get lip fillers and I‘m curious if it would trigger/cause the vitiligo to spread beyond my lips? I know that it is unpredictable but I was wondering if anyone has had experience injecting someone with vitiligo. Are there ways to minimize the trauma from the needle or techniques? Suggestions or advice please!

Answer: Can I get lip fillers if I have vitiligo and are there ways to limit trauma from the needle
Typically a combination of treatments will yield the best result. Fillers, such as Volbella, which are thinner are recommended for the lip area. Other treatments such as lasers, chemical peels, and microneedling can help improve skin tone and texture.
Lip size may vary after filler injection and depends on multiple variables such as your anatomy, filler used, and your metabolism to name a few. The duration of the effect also depends on multiple factors and should be discussed with your physician at the time of injection.
You will definitely be at a higher risk for bleeding and bruising due to your medications with lip injections. I encourage you to see a board certified plastic surgeon for your treatment. Discuss your medical history and medications to determine what is best for you.
