I didn't wear compression stockings the first night after sclerotherapy, will the procedure still work?

I had sclerotherapy three days ago and was told to wear the stockings for at least three days but take them off at night... Reading everything it seems like I should be wearing them for 7 days/24h a day... I've been wearing them none stop now because I work very long hours serving... But I'm nervous that my vein will come back since I didn't wear the stockings the first night... I also had one large damaged vein removed last... Im only 25 so I don't have varicose veins, yet at least...

Thank you for your question.  It is important to wear your compression stockings after sclerotherapy.  We get a high volume of sclerotherapy patients at our office and do see a difference if our patients stick to the post procedure protocol.  That being said, your treatment will likely work if performed correctly, but you will get better results with continued compression for 48 hours post treatment.

I recommend that my patients wear compression hose for 48 hours post treatment.  They can remove them to shower and then reapply.  The reason for the compression is to keep the solution in contact with the veins to help to dissolve them and to reduce any bruising.  It would have been better to wear the hose the first night but since this did not happen just wait and see what your veins look like in 6 weeks.  Often times more than one sclerotherapy treatment is necessary.

The use of compression hose post sclerotherapy is a hotly debated topic with no clear answer.  We have our patients wear hose for 48 hours around the clock after sclerotherapy to reduce bruising, swelling and the risk of blood clots.  It is not clear whether the use of hose improves the success of sclerotherapy done by a venous specialist with modern sclerosing agents such as Asclera or Sotradecol.  I do not feel that you have harmed your success chances if your doctor used these medicines to treat you.  The daily use of hose now is more for how your legs feel and if they are swelling. You should be fine.  Although most physicians recommend stockings after sclerotherapy, there are plenty who don’t have the patients wear them at all, especially for spider veins. Give the veins at least 4-6 weeks to resolve and if they aren’t completely gone, have them rechecked by your physician.
