When flying out of town for vein treatments, how long should we wait before flying home?

I recommend two weeks.  With that said, plenty of patients have flown out at the 1 weeks mark.  I am usually ok with this but like them to ambulate frequently while on the plane to be sure to wear their compression stockings.  Best of luck.

All the above mentioned treatments have very low complication rates. For ablation we do duplex scan between 3rd and 5th day after the procedure and then can fly. For sclerotherapy there is no restriction to fly. In my practice I don't see any need of phlebectomy. I can get better results with ablation and sclerotherapy and don't believe in leaving behind permanent scars from phlebectomy. Good luck

If I had someone coming in town for those procedures, I would probably want to see them around 2 to 3 days after their surgery. I would want to look at their leg and perform an ultrasound to make sure everything looks fine. If so, at that point I’d be comfortable with them flying home with the understanding that they should continue to wear the compression stockings for a total of seven days.

When flying after any vein procedure, speak to the physician performing it.  With sclerotherapy we recommend a few days before flying short distances and for longer distances over 6hour flights as much time as possible but usually around 1 to 2 weeks.  

I recommend to wait 2 weeks after vein treatment before flying.  The reason for this is that if a clot is to occur it will happen in most cases within 2 weeks of treatment.  Fortunately, the development of a clot after a vein treatment is not common.

I recommend that you communicate directly with your provider that will be performing your treatments and follow ups to be able to arrange your care appropriately. It is also important to follow your post procedure instructions very well and be there for your post procedure scan before traveling back home. All the best,
