I am 12 Days pre op and wondering how bad does it affect to have a glass or two of wine with dinner? I am trying to avoid but there's two dinners that I have to go next week and I might have to have some. Would it be okay? I am little worried my surgery is too close..
Answer: Drinking before surgery Each Plastic Surgeon has their own view point on this and I would suggest you speak with your plastic surgeon. The reason that it is suggested that you stop or have minimal alcohol leading up to your surgery is that if can effect the metabolism (how fast the drugs last) of the anesthesia and pain medicines afterwards and can cause bleeding problems during surgery. Definitely do not drink and take pain medicines afterwards as it can cause you to stop breathing in certain circumstances. My suggestions to my patients is to have no more than one glass of wine or beer per day 2 weeks before surgery and preferably stop a week prior to surgery, resuming after pain medicines have stopped and you are back to your normal routine.#alcoholbeforesurgery

Answer: Alcohol and surgery Thanks for your inquiry. Alcohol thins the blood and can interact with medicines. Please discuss with your plastic surgeon that you are considering having a few drinks before surgery. Good Luck with your augmentation.

Answer: Alcohol 1-2 glasses of wine at a dinner party will not affect your surgery in any way, especially if it were still severaldays away. As long as you consume alcohol in moderation you should be fine. Good luck.

Answer: Drinking after surgery Dear lark1004, Drinking one or two glasses of wine prior to an operative procedure, as long as you are metabolically and physiologically well, should not compromise your outcome in any way. Excessive drinking, of course, puts you at risk for long-term malnutrition as well as compromisability to clot blood. Small amounts of alcohol consumed judiciously 10 to 12 days prior to surgery should not affect the outcome of your surgery. I hope this information has been of some assistance and best of luck. For these types of questions, it is also important you ask your operative surgeon as they may have a differing opinion and you want to ensure that their operative procedures aren’t compromised by any preoperative nutritional decisions you may have made. Sincerely, R. Stephen Mulholland, M.D. Certified Plastic Surgeon Yorkville, Toronto
