There are not a rule. Both forms are correct, but we've found that it is more comfortable and better attachment to the patient who go slowly decreasing. As you describe is ok.
My advice will be to postpone any ablative laser treatment for acne scars until you have been off the Accutane for at least 6 months to prevent risks of bad scarring.
