Age 22. Do I have gynaecomastia? Please help (Photo)

Ideally, gynecomastia surgery is delayed until full development, around age 18 after adolescent hormonal influenced breast development ceases. Sometimes it will resolve to a degree afterwards. Also if your child is overweight, often the breasts will diminish with weight loss once in the normal range. However I have operated on several adolescent males to develop gynecomastia for those stigmatized and traumatized by the size of his breasts in severe cases with good results. Yes it is possible they will grow again and another procedure may be required for best results, Discuss the risk vs benefits with your board certified plastic surgeon that has experience in this age group.

Gynecomastia by definition is prominent breasts in men. True gynecomastia is comprised of hypertrophy of the actual glandular tissue. Most men who we have treated at our institute with prominent breasts have a combination of increased glandular tissue along with excess fat.When the prominent breast is comprised primarily of fat, a liposuction may be the only procedure recommended. In most cases , however, we will excise the gland through an incision in the areola. Although physical exam is the best way to tell how much breast tissue may be present, your photos do show prominence of your breasts. If the findings on photos is verified by a physical exam, then you would be a candidate for lipo and excision.Always search for a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. A physical examination can determine whether or not the unwanted fullness is fat or glandular tissue. Either way, this can be improved by surgery. Visit a plastic surgeon with a lot of experience with gynecomastia. The goal will be to minimize the unwanted fullness with as little visible scarring as possible.  

By simple pictures we can't know if is fat only or if is a Gynecomastia. We need to put our hands on your breast to determine one or both. Please, vissit an ASAPS member Plastic Surgeon. If is just fat he will do a PAL Liposuction. If it's a Gynecomastia you will have some other scar for the gland resection. Goog luck.

Justin,Thank you for your question. Gynecomastia is enlargement of the male breast tissue and fatty tissue. From your photos it does appear that you do have gynecomastia.There are many reasons that people will have this condition. The most common form of gynecomastia occurs in three age groups; 1)babies due to maternal estrogen in the system 2)Teens going through puberty and 3) elderly as there are changes in testosterone and estrogen. Most cases that occur as babies and teenagers will resolve without further treatment. There is a small subset of patients with another cause for gynecomastia and these are more concerning and can include several types of hormone secreting cancers, breast cancer, and other endocrine abnormalities. Lastly, many medications and drugs including steroids and marijuana can also cause gynecomastia.I recommend that you seek consultation from a plastic surgeon to review your medical history, rule out treatable causes, and discuss surgical options as necessary.Best regards,Dr. Stutman
