Does topical anesthetic cream reduce effectiveness of the Erbium Yag Laser treatment?

The Erbium YAG laser delivers wavelengths of laser light into the dermal layers to eliminate damaged tissue and smooth away wrinkles and other signs of skin damage. The laser energy is absorbed by water in your skin cells so it can transform the condition of your skin at a cellular level. Topical anesthetic cream is frequently offered before Erbium YAG laser treatments, as this procedure can be uncomfortable for patients if it is not applied. The numbing cream is strictly designed to reduce discomfort and will not affect the effectiveness of the laser in any way, when applied properly. If the ointment is applied thickly to moist or wet skin, it is possible that the excess hydration will reduce the laser effects. Your doctor will likely be aware of this and us appropriate thickness and settings. However, an inexperienced provider may not realize this and under treat you.
