Is it possible to fix major eye asymmetry with any kind of surgery? (Photo)

Question

Shortly after I was born I was diagnosed with fibrous dysplasia of the skull which caused some asymmetry in my eyes. I don't think it has gotten any worse since then (FD is usually not progressive) and the only problems it has caused me have been the asymmetry and a large forehead. I was told to wait until my bone stops growing before doing any surgery. I am now 21 and am wondering if there is anything I can do to fix my asymmetry as it has made me very self conscious for my entire life. Thanks.

Hello, thank you for your question and photos! It is possible to realign your eyes however it is
a rather difficult and unique problem. You must seek a surgeon who does craniotomies, a
relatively high risk procedure which would surgically move part of your bone. Judging by your
photos there does seem to be some asymmetry but it can add character to your face. If you do
decide to go through with a surgery I would also recommend going to a university hospital as
this would ensure you get the advice of many qualified doctors. Good luck.

With this degree of vertical orbital dystopia caused by bone overgrowth, only a craniotomy with orbital box osteotomy can make any significant improvement. Whether this is a viable option depends on a thorough preoperative assessment with a 3D CT scan.

Yes, it is possible to improve orbital asymmetry caused by fibrous dysplasia of the bone. It is wise to seek consultation in a University setting for this so that you have the benefit of a team approach by craniofacial and orbital surgeons. You are likely to find experienced surgical teams at a tertiary referral center (large university) where patients with unusual or not-so-common problems tend to be referred.
