Watery discharge after rhinoplasty? I had rhino-septoplasty exactly 2 weeks ago and had my cast removed 2 days ago.

Question

I don't have problems with breathing and i love how my nose looks but ever since they took out my tampons i have fluid coming out of my nose like during cold , it's not yellow or bloody but i feel like a have a cold or something . Is this normal ? And when can i blow my nose ?

Watery discharge is normal after a rhinoplasty and can persist for quite some time. It is due to reactive inflammation as part of the recovery process, as well as changes in the normal pattern of nasal mucus discharge, which normally goes to the back of your nose and down your throat without your being aware of it. It can, in some cases, take several months to fully subside. I allow my patients to blow their nose within a week of surgery, but I would check with your surgeon to be certain.

Thank you for the question.  It is rather difficult to fully evaluate your situation without an in-person exam and in the absence of pictures. It's quite common to have a clear discharge following rhinoplasty, however. Your body naturally increases nasal discharge when you have packing or splints inside your nose. Now that your cast has been removed, you should experience gradual improvement in symptoms over the next couple of weeks. If these symptoms persist, make sure to alert your plastic surgeon to your concerns. 
An in-person exam with a board-certified plastic surgeon would be the best way to assess your situation and guarantee an individualized medical advice. Best of luck!

It is normal to have a runny nose for weeks after rhinoplasty. As long as it is clear and you have no fever or other symptoms don't worry. If it persists mention it to your surgeon at your next visit.
