Will drinking alcohol after rhinoplasty cause my nose to swell & look different while I'm out?

You will be expected to have post-operative inflammation in the days following your procedure. Drinking an excessive amount of alcohol can cause swelling and delay the healing process. Alcohol also thins the blood and therefore can cause bleeding. In my opinion, alcohol consumption should be avoided for 2 weeks after your surgery. Best of luck to you.

Thank you for your question. We don't recommend our patients to drink alcohol at least 6 months after their surgery.
The reasons for that:
The swelling on the nose is quite stubborn and it takes a long time for it to go down. It would be wise to drink a lot of water and follow a healthy dietain
Alcohol holds water in your body and this situation contributes to the swelling on your nose; delaying your healing process..... If you drink, the appearance of your nose woudln't change %100 but it will be more swelled for sure. Please make sure to drink lots of water in any case you were to drink too much

Hi Arnold! That's a good question and you'll find different answers. It depends on several factors. If the procedure is done closed, there's a higher likelihood of less swelling. Open rhinoplasty causes more swelling due to the amount of dissection. Heat, stress, salty diet, and over-exertion probably play more of a role than alcohol in the immediate time after rhinoplasty. If you have an event 3 weeks after your rhinoplasty, you will likely notice swelling as a result with heavy drinking. Fluid shifts in the body are in part what leads to swelling (alcohol being a diuretic). Hope this helps.

Following rhinoplasty, there will be significant post-surgical inflammatory swelling and hypervascularity of the nose as healing tissues require increased blood and lymphatic flow. Consumption of alcohol dilates blood vessels of the skin, often causing a temporary reddish or bluish hue to the overlying skin. Swelling may wax and wane depending upon your position. The discoloration and swelling will subside over time but may take a period of 6 months - one year to completely abate.
I am concerned, however, about your planned consumption of "large amounts" of alcohol. Do not fall upon your face or get involved in an altercation. Protect your nose!
