What are the consequences of treating the same area twice? I believe this happened to the left side of my upper abdomen

Question

I had a sculpsure treatment on the abdominal area - 5 pads. 3 pads on the lower abdomen and 2 on the upper. I took a break between the two cycles hence the mistake.The left upper abdomen is quite sore and I feel a nodule developing under the skin which I know is normal but the right side feels like I have had no treatment. There is a 50% chance my left side was treated twice and I'm absolutely freaking out because I don't know what are the potential consequences of this issue....

Hi and thank you for your question! I wasn't sure if I understood correctly - whether you had the same areas treated in two separate treatment sessions or treated twice at the same visit. There shouldn't be any concern with the former case as we commonly recommend patients to treat the same area 2-3 time for optimal results (with treatments spaced 6 weeks apart). If you had the same area treated twice at the same visit by mistake, I still don't think you will suffer any long lasting consequences, but to be on safe side, I recommend doing follow ups with your physician for an accurate assessment. Thank you for your question. I suggest that you discuss with your board certified facial plastic surgeon to learn more about recovery. Each treatment reduces about 25% of the remaining fat in the treated area and the maximal improvement point is about 12 weeks post-SculpSure.

I am not exactly sure what happened according to your description. I would talk with your treating doctor to obtain the accurate account of your treatment. I would not be alarmed if the same are was treated twice. Areas are commonly treated 2 to 3 times but are staggered. Adding extra energy to one area at the same time should have no long lasting consequences- possibly a better result. Please see your doctor to obtain the best answer.

I am not quite sure what happened (if anything) but there is no danger to an area being treated twice. Also, it is quite common for a patient to have more pain on one side than another. Do not worry. Continue to drink a lot of water and give your body time to recover. The nodule will resolve on it's own. Best of luck.

Many patients experience post-treatment discomfort and nodules to only one portion of their treatment area so I would reassure you about the differences between the left and the right side.  Your treatment specialist should be documenting the areas treated so the likelihood of treating the same area twice in one visit is low.  That being said, if you had two treatments back-to-back to the same area by mistake, you may experience more post-treatment inflammation to that area than you would with one treatment.  We recommend you speak candidly with your provider about your concern so he/she can provide the appropriate follow up care.

Thanks for your question. Don't worry. Since you had two pads on the upper abdomen, it is unlikely that you had just one side treated twice. The soreness and nodule you feel on one side may just be attributed to how that particular area is responding to treatment. Some patients don't experience any soreness after their treatment is completed, while others feel it in only some areas. If you are concerned, be sure to follow up with your physician.

the technician should be keeping track of where they put the paddles. however, it is very unlikely  to cause any problems if you treat an area twice. you should still plan a second treatment to all areas 6 weeks later.  you will also want to try and decrease your total body fat through better dieting and exercise.david berman md
