I am a 20 year old who has tuberous breasts and I desperately need surgery as I feel they are drooping so much that theyre stretching out my skin and Im worried it will get worse. I have not had a consultation with a doctor as I know I cannot afford surgery (Im a fulltime uni student and work a few times a week). Is it true that medicare can assist me? I am on my parents medicare card and not sure how medicare really works. Any information is much appreciated :)
Answer: Tuberous Breasts and Medicare Firstly you will need to be assessed during an initial consultation to determine whether you meet the specific criteria to be eligible for a Medicare rebate. Medicare will only provide a portion of the costs. If you are eligible and you have top private health insurance then your hospital fees may be covered. It is best to book in for a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon and be provided with a personal quote.

Answer: Tuberous Breasts Hello there If you fit the right criteria as determined in examination then there is a chance that Medicare will cover SOME of your costs .But it's not usually the major share of the expense .CheersTS

Answer: Tuberous breast correction under Medicare Hi KeychainAlthough Dr Kim Taylor is technically correct, the NSW Department of Health issued a policy in 2011 that discontinued the ability for plastic surgeons to correct any non-functional deformities in the public system. If you are truly tuberous, then seeing a Specialist Plastic Surgeon is your first step. There is an item number (code) for correction of tuberous breast deformity at the moment, although there are rumours that this may not be the case in the near future. Your Medicare rebate for the code is very little. If you have private health insurance that covers this item number (you usually need top cover with any fund), then a much greater proportion of the total costs will be covered - hospital, theatre, accommodation, implants. There will still be a gap in almost all cases.Good luckDr Gavin Sandercoe

Answer: Tuberous breasts in Australia HiI'm sorry to hear about your breast concerns.Talk to your GP and have them examine you. If you do genuinely have tuberous breasts, then you may be able to be treated through the public hospital system, which would be at no cost to you. There is likely to be long wait times though. The other option is to take out hospital insurance which will cover a lot of your private hospital fees (if there is a medicare item number for your condition). Without seeing you, or photos it is harder to be more specific. Private treatment without insurance will be very expensive as medicare would only contribute a small amount to the surgeon & anaesthetist fees & nothing to the hospital fees.I hope this helps, but I believe that your GP should be your first stop for more advice.Kind regardsKim
