Can I keep my toupee on during surgery if it's secured with plastic clips?

Question

I'm having surgery in the next couple of days and I wear a toupee piece with bangs. The clip combs are completely plastic (I've tested with a magnet ). Will I still be asked to remove it during surgery? And why might I be asked to remove it? I know I'll be out the whole time anyway and it shouldn't matter, of course I will comply if they tell me to, but it makes me feel secure. Thanks for any info!

We ask our patients to remove any metals during the surgery. If your toupee has plastic clips it should not be a problem. Best of luck to you

You will have a hairnet/ cap on during surgery. It is up to your surgeon if he/she allows you to keep the toupee on. Reach out and ask. Best wishes!

Unless it interferes with how your head rests on the table, it should be fine to keep this on. As you have already done according to the description, make sure that all clips holding it in are plastic and not metal.

During surgery your head will be resting on its back. If the clips are where there is pressure on them, then they need to be removed. Otherwise the pressure will create ulceration.

Your toupee is a source of bacteria and will need to be removed if surgery is on the upper half of your body. If you are not having surgery on your head, you will be given a surgical cap to wear. Please ask your surgeon.

If there is no metal you should not need to remove your toupee.  You will wear a surgical hat during your procedure so your hair will all be underneath that for sanitary reasons.  Your surgical team will advise you if it must be removed.  Good luck with your procedure!
