For how long after a rhinoplasty must I refrain from ballet?

I plan to have a rhinoplasty soon. I take ballet classes twice a week and they are fairly strenuous in terms of heart rate and body movements. For how long after the surgery must I refrain from dance? I'm over 40 and physically fit.

Dear CapriCammi,Your recovery will be as smooth and painless as possible because you are physical fit. If you choose to enroll in strenuous activities like ballet, you risk experiencing complications with your recovery and potentially damaging your nose. I suggest you wait 6 months post op until you opt in to strenuous activities. Remember that evening resting glasses on your nose can change the shape of your nose. Make an appointment with the board certified facial plastic surgeon who performed your procedure to address your concerns.

I usually have patients avoid aerobic type workouts for about 4 weeks, but if you are jumping and lifting. then I tell them to wait 6-8 weeks. Best to ask your surgeon.

In our practice, we ask patients to refrain from strenuous exercise for 2 weeks after the procedure, to prevent a nose bleed. It's also important not to get hit in the nose for the first 6 weeks after the procedure.

You will find different answers to your
question. With regards to your swelling, I would recommend to wait until you
see that the swelling is stable on a daily basis. This can take between 4 weeks
to 3 months.

Another issue is how much of the
activity that you want to do, has any risk of trauma that can damage your
future broken nose. Ballet might sound soft, but we both know that there is a
lot of physical contact that might result in a misadventure trauma.

Also remember that you have waited at
least half of your life expectancy for this episode in your life. Take your
time to heal and make sure that everything goes the way is supposed to.

Finally, make sure that you have a consultation
with a board certified plastic surgeon that specializes in rhinoplasty.

Ballet is a very physical activity, as you are well aware. (You must be in good shape and this reduces risk of anesthesia and surgery in general.) I advise patients they can begin light exercise after 10 days (maybe some light stretching or barre would be ok), but I recommend waiting a full 20 days before returning to your normal ballet workouts. And be especially careful with bending, straining, or lifting. If dancing with a partner, I'd avoid any impact for 6 weeks. Better to be safe than sorry after such a great investment in your look!
