Will MiraDry cause me to develop keloids or permanent scars?

Question

I'm interested in MiraDry, but I am worried that I will develop keloids. Both my parents are from Nigeria (West Africa) and I'm not sure if I personally have the potential to develop keloids easily. I had breast lift surgery about 2 years ago with armpit fat reduction through liposuction and I didn't develop any major keloids, although the ring around my left areola seems to have healed a bit thicker than the right (very subtle). Both my ears are pierced with no keloids, however.

Thanks for your question.  While I can't guarantee that there is absolutely no risk of scarring or keloids from MiraDry, it is very unlikely that you will have a problem with it.  The upper chest, shoulders, and upper back tend to be much more common areas to keloid or get hypertrophic scars than the armpits.  You might be able to have your dermatologist try a test spot and then wait awhile to make sure you don't seem to be developing any scars.  We have not seen any keloids or scars after many years of treating patients with MiraDry.  Please see an expert and best of luck!

There is always a small risk of keloid formation in your particular case.  Regardless of how small the risk is there is never a guarantee you will not develope keloid scar.  One option to consider is to use a neuro-toxin (Botox, Xeomin or Dysport). For excessive sweating the effect persists for much longer than for aesthetic use frequently up to a year or even more. You can markedly decrease perspiration with doses much smaller than "recommended" . Unless one desires there is no need to stop perspiration. Good luck!
