I have PAL scheduled in a month but I didn't ask the doctor about potential organ injury. My initial assumption was that it takes less force to do the lipo, it is very unlikely to perforate the abdominal wall with such weak force. What is the actual truth?
Answer: Understanding the Risks of Organ Injury in Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL) Hi en5j780aD3, Thank you for your question regarding the risks of organ injury with Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL). It's great that you're taking the time to understand more about the procedure before going ahead with it. PAL is a technique where a device is used to enhance the efficiency of fat removal. The device typically vibrates or rotates to break up fat cells, making them easier to suction out. This method can be gentler than traditional liposuction techniques and often results in less bruising and faster recovery for the patient. Regarding the risk of organ injury, it's essential to understand that while any surgical procedure carries some level of risk, serious complications like organ perforation are rare in the hands of a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon. With PAL, as with any liposuction technique, the cannula (the tube used to remove the fat) does not typically penetrate deeply enough to reach or damage internal organs when performed correctly. The perceived 'weak force' of PAL does not equate to a higher risk of organ injury. In fact, the enhanced control can potentially reduce certain risks. However, it is crucial to have a detailed discussion with your surgeon about all possible risks and complications. A comprehensive preoperative evaluation and the use of proper techniques are critical in minimizing risks. If you have any concerns or questions, I strongly advise discussing them directly with your surgeon before your procedure. It is always better to go into surgery with a clear understanding of all aspects of the procedure, including its risks. Sincerely, Dr. Katzen

Answer: Organ injury? Organ injury is a very rare complication and is not influenced by the use of a power assisted device one way or the other. I personally love the PAL and think it allows me to do a better job with liposculpting. Good luck!!!

Answer: What are the risks of organ injury with power assisted liposuction? Thank you for your question. This is an issue you need to discuss with your surgeon. Power assisted liposuction is a tool. Your surgeon should be well trained in using the appropriate tools. Make sure your surgeon is a board certified plastic surgeon. Organ injury is nonexistent in trained hands, but it's been reported mainly with surgeons and non-surgeons who are not trained appropriately and learn these procedures through weekend courses. Good luck.

Answer: Depends on the surgeon There have been multiple cases of organ injury/perforation during liposuction. It is very important to do your research on your surgeon. You can decrease your chances of this complication happening by choosing an experienced plastic surgeon who is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Good luck!
